COtrekker...thanks for the ribbing I well deserve, was kinda hoping to duck it. :W
The floor is made of concrete and I don't want to even think about lowering it. Likely it will require roof work. Unfortuniatly I haven't moved in yet so no pictures, will post some when we do and will also post the solution.

Modifying Metal buildings

I hope this is the right place for this question...
We just recently bought a new home that has a large metal building on it. I thought that it was high enough for out RV but it is not...darn. What I'd like to know is can these metal buildings be eaily modified; raise the roof or change the pitch?
I am sure that will be a flood of comments about my inability to measure and questions about the construction itself. I can tell you it is a welded frame building with screw fastners for the insulated metal.

I heard horror stories about Gulfstream rushing the unit to market and the lack of service when coming to fixing issues, also heard simular storries about the Jayco. We have the Seneca and I personally like the setup. But if I had a chance to do it over today I would give the Super Nova the nod. I hve looked at them a few times now and like the bunk model, bunk area could optioned to an office area. For the money SuperC's seem to be the way to go. Remember, when dealing for one, start your asking price with the dealer at 30% to 45% below what they are asking. When you hit the sticking point, then ask for the upgrades and the sattilite dish free. With the current economy, it is your market!

I still have the stock Winegard antenna in place but haven't needed to use it, it is still connected. Our only issue with the installation was the use of some really goopy sealant on the roof that required an overnight stay in CampingWorld to cure; rain and wind were the problem. I spoke to the tech about using a quick setting sealant and he advised the quick set stuff tends to be hard to remove if there needs to be a repair. If the weather was good and we were only going a short distance they would have let us move on.
We went with the new Trav'ler. Only issue with it was what I think is a design flaw in the retractable arm. We hit some freezing conditions and when the dish moved to the upright position, the arm remained in the stowed position, against the dish (doesn't touch). The dish was seeking sattilites but could not get the signal. I turned it off that night and the next day when it warmed up, I tried the dish again. This time the arm plopped down with a slight thud. There are springs but the frost must have hung it up. I asked a tech about the lube, they used and recommend silicon over Lithuim because it tends to streak on the roof. Personally, I think it ia a cost issue. I think a light coat of lithium or graphite on instalation of the arm would have prevented this minor issue.
Only wish would be a manual override that allows us to input the sattlite position that most RV parks provide these days. Other wise we love it, I plant the RV (level it) and hook up the shore power and water, start the sattlite up and let it search, and few minutes later it is done. If power goes off the dish stays in position and the reciever re-establishes the position and takes about 5 minutes.

Had one installed by Camping World last January and no issues yet. We have Dish net and they even came out and changed over the reciever in the rig when we settled here in OK.

RE: Water heater not working on my Seneca?

I seem to always having this issue after shutting the propane tank off to hook up the extend-a-stay tank. I can hear the heater trying to start inside but if you are not sure, have someone turn on the heater while you are outside. I open the access panel and step away. On the eletric, side of the heater, you are running shore power right?

It can be driven but the chances for flat tires is greater if the weather has been wet and or the winter snow pack run off has brought more railroad spikes to the surface. Even with flats, a trip to remember...

I recall there is a restriction sign on the mine side to prevent peole in RVs from going through. There is a really tight switch back just past summit lake that will ruin your day. Use a toad.

Seneca height clearance

I haven't hit any thing yet but it might be just dumb luck. Anyone know the clearance height for a 35GS? Width? We are looking at a house with a seperate metal garage and will need to know if and how high we would need to change the door to accomodate our RV.

I talked to Honda dealers and they said Honda would not recommend towing, Interesting that it is in the owner's manual. I had heared, never confirmed, the new tranny in the 07 and up was the reason for the change. However, the CRV was still going to be towable and it has the same power train. Go figure. If you haven't had a problem towing yet, you are in luck and as I thought, Honda is trying to discourage the towing due to the differenc ebetween the odometer milage and the actual milage.

Did you check out the changes for the tranny in the 08? Do you need to install a tranny pump? Are you refering to dog agility? We are in OK now...as soon as we find a house I will change our signature location.

J-D, Good point on the unattended dangers, although statistically low in terms of possibility, without a doubt could be catastrophic.
Lunatic, Love your handle... it is a 2005 and yes there is a procedure in the owners manual for towing all four down, which I followed to the letter except I ran the engine the whole Alaskan Highway, then every time I stopped for lunch or the night; never more that 200 miles. I know the controversies of the towing issue and from what I have learned, Honda's greatest issue is the Odometer, with engine off, does not count up the towed miles. The liability factor for them is the warranty. The manager I spoke to, who would not put it in writing, is they are seeing cars come in with 20,000 on the odometer but suspension that had 40,000. I just did over 6000 miles without any problems. I just had the dealer look it over and change all fluids. It runs like a clock, a Swiss clock. Are you planning on getting an Element?

Thanks for the info on the wiring othertonka. As for the shifter moving into gear while driving, I doubt it would happen. I suppose it would take the same energy to make it jump into gear as it would be to jump out of gear. I have been on very rough back roads and never had it jump out of gear. I don't drive th RV on rough roads and really go slow when the roads look rough. Now that we are in the lower 48 and into more moderate temps, I won't be doing this unless I have to, but it is nicve to know I can if needed.

Honda Element Engine on when towed

While driving down from AK last month, the battery in the Element died just outside Glennallen. I jump started it and just left it running all the way to Vancouver with no issues. I filled the tank when we got to Seattle. I called my buddy on the east coast, he is a mechanic for over 30 years and he did not think there could be any problem. I have not had any problems with the car but wanted to share.

Just had the suspension worked, had safety steer and the blue link installed and what a difference. Just drove through the gusty storm on the west coast OR/WA areas and no issues even passing trucks. Went from white knuckle driving to a very relaxed drive.

Just traveled down the Alaskan Highway from Anchorage and have done plenty of winter camping in our Seneca. I recommend dry camping over placing any additional lights or heaters in compartments. I put a few gallons of anti freeze in the holding black/grey tanks and use cheap low temp windshield washing fluid to flush the toliet. Paper plates and disposable knives and forks, fire is a requirement. The inside of the rig we run a oil radiator and a fan creamatic heater. I use the Yamaha generator from our travel trailer days to power them through the night. I have used the onboard generator but it uses twice the fuel.

Thanks for all the input. We cleared the border a few days ago and had no problems. The folks at Swift River Lodge were fantastic. We pulled in on Christmas day and they feed us and let us stay the night free. Dennis and his family are the best and I highly recommend stopping in even if it is just for a cup of coffee. Tell him the Christmas guests sent you!
We got great advise to avoid the Cassiar, only thing open on the top half was Deese Lake. Too long a run for no support.

To all, thanks for all the input. We cleared Canada 5 days ago and we survived the 97 to 99 to Whistler section of the trip. I will say that if I did not have the experience of driving in AK and the warm up drive down the Alaskan Highway, I would not have taken this route. It is as posted very twisty, steep gades, and narrow bridges. The day we traveled these roads it was clear and the road report was good. However, it would be ill advised for those inexperienced or faint of heart.

RE: 2005 Honda Element long distance tow

I have it in my owners manual as well, towable and has the procedure. I have towed it but only for short hauls (200-300 miles). It is the 3000 mile trip we are about to head out on that has me asking how others have faired. I will follow the suggestion to run the motor during lunch breaks.
